Please consider asking your provider for 200 of Miso to help soften the cervix prior to placement! It also is very great to get it placed while on your menses.
Hope this helps.

I had the same experience as Nina. I also looked up for a free-hormone method and thought the copper IUD was the best choice.
I never took any hormonal method in my life, just relayed on condoms as preservatives, until I heard about Fertility Awareness method, but I was not confident to try it… yet.
Some friends told me that with the IUD I would bleed heavily on my periods and my cramps would be stronger than ‘normal’. I thought that it was ok, I could take it.
I had the copper IUD inserted without anesthesia. That day I almost cry with pain and just went home to lay down to bed. I had cramps since day 1 till the day I asked to have the copper IUD removed.
I experienced filling up 2 or more organic cups a couple of days of the period [some times 3 cups!] and bleeding heavily in general for almost ten days in a row during my period.
For context: My normal periods have been every 25 days, bleeding only 5, with just the 2nd day to be 1 cup full at the most.
With the IUD I experienced cramps almost every day [in or outside the period]. I couldn’t work or perform normally.
After 6 weeks the doctor checked it to see if it was well inserted. It was, and she told me I would need 6 months to adjust to it. [Wait what? My body getting adjusted to a device, not the device to my body?]
But at the 2nd month I asked the doctor if I could get an ultrasound to check why was it still so painful. The ultrasound showed that nothing was wrong, but couldn’t go on with it anymore. I asked the doctor to remove the copper IUD in the 3th month of use.
Afterwards I my period changed, and I guess it started to readjust to get back on track?
My next period after the IUD was removed came back at the 35 day [almost 10 days later than usual, no pregnancy related]. Little by little my period started to get back to normal.
I certainly wouldn’t go back into copper IUD. It didn’t work for me, maybe others would have other positive experiences with it. But this experience convinced me that I would like to learn more about Fertility Awareness and find natural ways for taking care of my fertility.
Since then, I am listening to my body even more. I am glad to listen to this episode and Lisa’s Fertility Friday program in general.
