Dr Arvigo is a Doctor of Naprapathy, an herbalist, an international lecturer, and an author and teacher of Maya medicine. Dr Arvigo is the Director of the Arvigo Institute and she is the author of six books on traditional healing of Central America. She has lived in Belize for thirty years where she studied with more than a dozen traditional healers. She is also the founder of The Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy and courses in Maya Spiritual Healing.
Rosita is dedicated to the preservation of traditional Maya healing for the benefit of the people of Belize and the world! And in today’s show we are going to be talking about the Arvigo technique of Maya abdominal therapy, and vaginal steaming. This is the podcast that has been the most interesting to me since I started listening to the podcasts here on Fertility Friday. While I was investigating whether or not Femcap was for me (I learned about it and liked the thought of that better than condoms, and I now pair it with withdrawal to bump it up to a high efficacy), I was trying to figure out if I had a tilted uterus or not, and it seemed to me like you either have a tilted uterus or you don’t. This podcast taught me that there are way more positions than just two.
I never really did understand if my uterus was tilted or not, I wanted to know because having a tilted uterus is apparently a contraindication for using Femcap. I was trying to understand whether or not the way your cervix was positioned was an indication of how your uterus is positioned. I would love to get some information on that by Dr. Arvigo herself. I ended up buying Femcap even though I was completely uncertain about the position of my uterus (it’s available to buy over the counter in Sweden, where I live) and I’ve never had it checked in hindsight either. My reason for that is a very unpleasant experience that I had with the first midwife I ever met. She was robotic, completely insensitive and didn’t seem to take my questions and concerns seriously.
Listening to this podcast, hearing about how injury or falls can misplace the uterus, it left me wondering if hula hooping would be bad for us in that regard? Hula hooping is my favorite form of exercise and I would be very interested to know if it has any impact or not. My hoop is not one of those heavy, weighted ones (I imagine those are horrible for the uterus because the one I tried bruised me severely on my hips and abdomen), it ways about 400 grams and has no indentantions.
So these are my questions:
1) Does the position of your cervix (the way it leans) tell you anything about the position of your uterus? For example, my cervix almost always tilts a bit to the direction of my rectum.
2) Would hula hooping be bad for our uterine health?
3) Which ways are there to check what position your uterus is in?

Hi Jenny! I’m thrilled that you enjoyed this episode. It was definitely an amazing experience for me to have the opportunity to interview Dr. Arvigo. Great question by the way! My suggestion would be to contact an Arvigo Therapy practitioner in your area if you are concerned that your uterus may be tilted. I would imagine that an Arvigo Therapy Practitioner would have to actually examine you to determine the position and tilt of your uterus. I would suggest to try this link here: https://arvigotherapy.com/practitioners and see if you can find a practitioner near you. When it comes to cervical position, at this point I am only familiar with how it relates to where you are in your menstrual cycle (i.e. high, soft, open and wet, or low firm and closed), but not how it relates to the tilt or position of your uterus in the general sense. Good luck! And let me know how it goes if you decide to find an Arvigo practitioner.

Hi Jenny
I’m a massage therapist, birth doula, and certified practitioner and teacher of the Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy®.
(1) Yes, the position of your cervix can indicate the position of your uterus. An Arvigo practitioner assesses uterine position based on external palpation of your lower abdomen, your symptoms, and your pelvic alignment.
(2) Without actually observing you doing hula hooping, I would imagine it would be a great way to keep your pelvic structures mobile and help to maintain good circulation in the pelvic cavity. However, if your pelvis is out of alignment the hula hooping could be causing undue stress on certain structures. Also, a heavy hoop would surely put strain on your uterine ligaments and affect your uterine alignment.
(3) To gain a better understanding of all this and to help self-assess your uterine alignment, a session with an Arvigo practitioner will enlighten you. The Arvigo Institute also offers a 1 day and a 2.5 day class that goes into more depth than Rosita’s podcast about signs/symptoms/causes of uterine displacement, plus you learn the self-care abdominal massage. If a care provider in the past has told you that you have a tilted uterus (note, western medicine considers a tilted uterus a variation of normal, and not the cause of symptoms or a potential pathology) then that is another way for you to know. If you go see a care provider after reading this to have them check – be sure they check you STANDING UP – as gravity also plays an important role here.

Thank you so much Donna! That was really helpful. I might go to a care provider just to have this checked because I’m really curious. At the moment, there is only one Arvigo massage therapist in Sweden and she lives 750 kilometres away from me but I might make a trip there anyway just to explore that part of the country and squeeze in a visit whilst I’m there, as I’m really curious to know what my uterus is like and if it’s aligned properly or not. I would be thrilled to know about how to take care of myself and I will note to be standing up if a care provider is gonna examine my uterine position. Thank you!
