Inbal Reichman Cohen says
Thanks for an amazing episode! I really enjoyed it and learned from it.
Could you please elaborate on why a vegetarian diet preproposes mothers to birth injury?
Fertility Friday says
Hi Inbal, a vegetarian diet does not contains sufficient glycine. Gelatin is derived from collagen and it contains glycine and proline, two amino acids that are used in the production of collagen (an essential part of our skin, tissues, ligaments, etc.). Pregnancy is a time where a woman’s glycine needs increase significantly. Just think about how much her skin is stretching, her uterus is growing, ligaments, and don’t forget what is necessary to build a baby! When your diet does not contain any animal products (such as skin, joint bones, ligaments from animal sources … i.e. bone broth), you run the increased risk of birth injury, and you can dramatically increase the time it takes to heal your tissues. Read Real Food For Pregnancy for a detailed run down of the science behind why women’s glycine needs (from animal sources) increase during pregnancy.
