I’M listening to the latest podcast. I am a vegan. I understand what you are saying, I really do. However many people in other cultures have a vegan diet. I think of the entire content of India. I am going to research more but this is hard to take in. I respect your expertise but i was raised this way and it goes against my religion.

Hi Naima, from my understanding in India there is a history of vegetarianism. They consumed fresh dairy, but to my knowledge there is no traditional culture that consumed a diet with zero animal foods whatsoever.

I listened to this podcast a while ago so but have been trying to remember to comment. I thought the information was great but was put off a bit hearing your comment on how “thankfully” your vegan relatives were not planning to pro-create. The information seemed more of a way to optimize a vegetarian & to discontinue a vegan diet instead of optimizing. I’ve read a decent amount of the research regarding vegan pregnancies, from what I’ve read the issues associated w/b12 deficiency & neurodevelopment issues in offspring were typically in unsupplemented mothers. I thought it was interesting/surprising the talk of iron deficiency despite eating meat/liver. I am a dietitian & managed to avoid iron deficiency in my vegan pregnancy. I always like to encourage food first of course, but understand supplements are necessary at times. Since many people are vegan for ethical reasons (and likely will continue the lifestyle) I think it’s important to meet people where that at & give them ideal supplementation recommendations/food choices. Again I did think the information was great especially regarding choline which I have been seeing pop up more in research articles & webinars.

I love that vegan & vegetarian diets are specifically mentioned here. Sometimes we are too precious about not wanting to hurt people feelings but what this podcast highlights is what is optimal. I work in pre & post natal nutrition and love this honesty especially as i see more women on restrictive diets that just don’t work during pregnancy.
